The Evolution of Little Caesars Arena: Detroit’s New Multi-Purpose Arena
Just a short month ago, the city of Detroit officially opened Little Caesars Arena. LCA is the new home of the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings, NBA’s Detroit Pistons, and many other concerts and events. LCA also features many cool restaurants and different features. The opening also marks a new era in Detroit sports, which breathes new life into the city as a whole.
Construction plans for a new $450 million arena for the Detroit Red Wings as well as the area around it, “The District Detroit” were announced in July 2014 as a replacement to the Red Wings old venue, Joe Louis Arena, with a groundbreaking ceremony in September of the same year. In February 2016 it was announced that local pizza chain Little Caesars got naming rights to the arena, naming it “Little Caesars Arena”.
In October 2016, Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gorges was considering moving the team from their then current arena, Palace of Auburn Hills, to the new arena. On November 22, 2016, the team officially announced they were going to move to Downtown Detroit for the first time since 1978.
The first event the arena hosted was a Kid Rock concert on September 12, 2017. The Red Wings hosted their first home preseason game on September 23, 2017, winning 5-1 over the Boston Bruins. The Pistons hosted their first preseason game at the new arena on October 4, 2017, losing 108-106 to the Charlotte Hornets. A day later, the Red Wings hosted their first regular season game at the new arena, winning 4-2 over the Minnesota Wild
Other than hosting the Red Wings and Pistons, the arena also hosts many other sports events, such as various WWE events, UFC events, college basketball, and college hockey games. The arena has already played concerts to artists like Ed Sheeran and Paul McCartney, and is hosting Fall Out Boy, Guns N’ Roses, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry in the future.
Little Caesars Arena will carry on the legacy like The Palace of Auburn Hills and Joe Louis Arena, but in a new and modern way. For more info on events, check littlecaesarsarena.com for more details.
