FARGO, ND — A man being held for intoxication management at the Cass County Jail briefly escaped from the jail’s holding area on Friday, Oct. 16, before being found about a half hour later. Fargo police officers located him near the jail, and he was taken back into custody.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said the man got out of the holding area and was outside the cell for roughly 30 minutes. The incident prompted the jail to take the holding cell out of service while staff wait for a maintenance assessment.
How the jail’s holding area is set up
According to the sheriff’s office, the holding cell has two doors. One opens into the booking area, and the other leads to the drive-in area where people are brought into the jail.
That layout matters because the escape involved the door to the drive-in area. Officials said it was closed but not secured, and it did not set off an alarm. The sheriff’s office did not say how the man got past the door or whether anyone else was present when he left the area.
Fargo police found the man near the jail
After the man got out of the holding area, law enforcement searched for him in the area around the jail. Fargo police officers found him nearby and returned him to the facility.
The sheriff’s office did not say exactly where near the jail he was located or describe whether he was alone when officers recovered him. The short distance from the jail and the quick return helped keep the incident from turning into a longer search.
Intoxication management and jail procedures
The man had been held for intoxication management, a custody arrangement used when a person needs to be monitored because of alcohol or drug impairment. In this case, that placement did not prevent him from leaving the holding area once the unsecured door failed to hold.
The sheriff’s office has not said whether any charges or disciplinary steps will follow the escape. For now, the focus appears to be on the physical condition of the holding area and whether repairs or other changes are needed before it goes back into service.
Maintenance review underway after the escape
The jail has removed the holding cell from service while maintenance staff assess the problem. Officials said the door to the drive-in area was not secured properly, but they did not identify a broader systems failure beyond the missing alarm trigger.
That assessment will likely determine whether the door mechanism, alarm system, or both need attention before the cell can be used again. The sheriff’s office has not announced a timeline for restoring the holding area or said whether other parts of the jail will be checked as a precaution.
What authorities have said so far
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the basic sequence: the man left the holding area, Fargo police found him nearby, and he was returned to the jail. Officials also said the unsecured door did not alarm, which allowed the escape to go unnoticed at first.
No injuries were reported in connection with the incident, and authorities have not released the man’s name. The situation remains a maintenance and security review issue for the jail rather than a prolonged public search.
