SIOUX FALLS, SD — Two people were taken to Sioux Falls hospitals after a stabbing east of downtown late Thursday, according to police, who later said they had identified everyone involved in the attack.
Officers responded shortly after 11:15 p.m. Oct. 29 to the area of Eighth Street and Indiana Avenue after getting a report of a stabbing. Sgt. Aaron Benson said a 33-year-old man called police and reported that he had been stabbed in the neck during an altercation.
He told officers the suspected attacker was wearing black pants and a black shirt and drove away in a gray SUV. First responders then found a second victim at the scene who authorities believe was also stabbed by the same person.
Police say both victims were taken for treatment after the attack
Emergency crews transported both victims to hospitals for care. Police said each suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The department did not immediately release details about the relationship between the victims and the suspect, nor did it describe what led up to the altercation. Investigators were still working to sort out the sequence of events after the initial emergency response.
The report to police came from the first victim, who said the neck injury happened during the confrontation. The second victim was found by responders after officers and fire personnel arrived in the area.
Investigators tracked a gray SUV to a residence west of the stabbing scene
After the stabbing, police found a vehicle matching the suspect description at a home near West 12th Street and Melrose Place. That location is nearly five miles west of the original scene near downtown.
Benson said the people involved had been identified and located by later in the investigation. He did not say whether anyone was taken into custody, and police have not released additional information about possible charges.
The matching vehicle gave investigators a lead away from the original crime scene and helped them narrow the search for the people connected to the case. Police said the investigation remains open.
Benson says rumors about a sheriff's deputy were false
As the case spread online, police moved to correct a claim that a sheriff’s deputy had been one of the victims. Benson said that information was inaccurate and did not come from law enforcement.
He said the rumor appears to have started with misinterpreted scanner traffic and then circulated on social media before being checked against official information. Police warned that the claim had not been verified through proper law enforcement channels.
The department’s response underscored the gap that can open between fast-moving emergency communications and confirmed details. Officials said readers should rely on verified updates from police rather than unconfirmed posts.
Late-night violence comes as police continue piecing together what happened
The stabbing added another urgent call to Thursday night’s police workload in Sioux Falls, with officers and first responders converging on a busy area just east of downtown. The scene drew immediate attention because of the location and because two people required medical treatment.
Police have not publicly said what prompted the altercation or whether the victims knew the suspect before the incident. Those unanswered questions remain part of the active investigation.
For now, authorities have confirmed only that the people involved were found and that the injuries were not life-threatening. The department has not released a full account of how the confrontation unfolded.
What police have confirmed so far about the stabbing case
Based on the information released by police, the case began with a call from a 33-year-old man who said he had been stabbed in the neck. Officers then found a second injured person and later located a vehicle matching the suspect description.
Authorities said all of the people involved were identified and located, but they have not yet provided a public arrest report or detailed timeline of the encounter. The investigation continues as officers review what happened near Eighth Street and Indiana Avenue.
Police have asked the public to treat social media claims carefully while the case is being sorted out. For now, the confirmed facts are limited to the injuries, the vehicle description, and the department’s statement that the rumored deputy victim was not accurate.
