MOONACHIE, NJ — A New Jersey State trooper fatally shot a man Wednesday evening after a vehicle crash in an industrial section of Moonachie, and state investigators are now working to determine what led up to the encounter.
Authorities said the man was found inside a Kia Soul that had struck a concrete wall on West Commercial Avenue. Witnesses described a sudden, heavy police response in an area that is usually quiet, with multiple marked and unmarked vehicles arriving after the crash.
Officials have not said what prompted officers to stop or follow the driver before the shooting.
Witnesses Describe a Sudden and Heavy Police Response
People working nearby said the scene unfolded quickly around 5:15 p.m. Roberto Maldonado said he and a friend had just left work when they saw the crashed Kia outside a food warehouse.
He described seeing one person on the ground and another in the vehicle, while a large number of police cars moved into the area. Maldonado said the response was intense and confusing, with officers telling people to move back.
Angel Burns, who works nearby, said the shooting was disturbing because the location is generally calm. She said she passes through the area every night and was shaken by hearing that someone had been shot there.
Investigators Say the Man Was Shot by a State Trooper
Authorities said a New Jersey state trooper shot and killed the man who was inside the vehicle. Sources told Eyewitness News that the man was struck in the neck. Police have not publicly confirmed additional details about the gunfire.
Images from the scene showed blood visible on the vehicle’s airbag and the driver’s door open. Officials have not said whether the man was armed or whether he had been the subject of an active investigation.
The identity of the trooper has not been released, and state police have also not named the man who died.
Unmarked Vehicles Reportedly Followed the Driver Before the Crash
Several unmarked police vehicles appeared to be following the driver before the Kia slammed into the wall, according to what was visible at the scene. Authorities have not explained what those officers were doing or why the driver was being watched.
It is still unclear whether the crash happened as a result of police contact, whether the driver tried to flee, or whether any other people were involved. Officials also have not said if anyone else was taken into custody after the shooting.
Those missing details are central to the investigation, which remains active as state and local agencies collect evidence and review what happened before the vehicle came to rest.
ATF Agents and State Police Units Joined the Response
Federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also present at the scene alongside state and local police. The federal agency typically handles cases involving firearms and explosives.
The New Jersey State Police Weapons Trafficking Unit also responded to the location, adding another layer of law enforcement interest in the case. Officials have not said whether the unit’s presence was connected to the person who was shot, the vehicle, or another broader investigation.
The large number of agencies at the scene underscored how quickly the incident escalated from a crash into a major law-enforcement response.
State Attorney General’s Office Is Reviewing the Shooting
The New Jersey attorney general’s office is investigating the police-involved shooting, which is standard in fatal encounters involving officers in the state. That review will help determine whether the trooper’s actions complied with policy and law.
For now, investigators have not said why officers engaged the man before the gunfire or what information they had at the time. The unanswered questions include whether the man was armed, why he was being pursued, and whether the encounter was tied to another case.
Until officials release more information, the full sequence of events from the initial contact to the fatal shot remains unknown.
