South Dakota Man Dies After Pickup Is Found Submerged in Missouri River Near Standing Bear Bridge in Nebraska

Posted on October 23, 2026

KNOX COUNTY, NE — A South Dakota man died after law enforcement found him inside a pickup truck submerged in the Missouri River near Standing Bear Bridge in northeastern Nebraska. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded Sunday to a single-vehicle crash and later located the Ford F-350 in the water.

The man was identified as 50-year-old Ryan Martin of Springfield, South Dakota. Authorities said he was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported, and officials have not said how the truck ended up in the river.

Deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash near the bridge

According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, the crash involved only one vehicle. Deputies were called to the area near Standing Bear Bridge on Sunday, where they encountered an emergency scene centered on the submerged truck.

The Missouri River location made recovery more complicated than a typical roadway crash. The pickup was not immediately accessible, and responders needed help to reach the vehicle and confirm that a person was inside.

The sheriff’s office did not release a sequence of events showing whether the truck left the roadway before entering the water or what may have contributed to the crash.

Ryan Martin was identified as the driver

Authorities identified the driver as Ryan Martin, 50, of Springfield, South Dakota. He was found in the submerged Ford F-350 after responders reached the truck.

Officials said Martin was pronounced dead at the scene. No information was released about passengers, so it appears the crash involved only the driver. The sheriff’s office has not provided details about whether any witness accounts helped guide the response.

The identification links the crash to a South Dakota resident traveling in neighboring Nebraska, though officials have not said where Martin was headed or why he was on the road near the river bridge.

Recovery crews were needed to reach the vehicle

Gary’s Repair and Wrecker Service of Yankton was called in to assist responders. The towing and recovery company helped law enforcement gain access to the submerged pickup, a step that was necessary before officials could fully assess the scene.

Water recoveries often require specialized equipment and careful coordination because of current, depth, and visibility conditions. In this case, officials said only that the repair and wrecker service assisted with access to the truck, not the exact methods used.

The involvement of a private recovery crew suggests the vehicle could not be removed quickly by deputies alone. Authorities did not say how long the truck remained in the river before it was reached.

Officials have not said what caused the crash

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office has not said what led to the pickup entering the Missouri River. No cause has been announced, and investigators have not described weather, speed, impairment, or mechanical failure as factors.

That means the circumstances remain unclear beyond the basic facts that a single-vehicle crash occurred and the truck was later found submerged near Standing Bear Bridge. Any determination about why the crash happened will depend on the continuing investigation by local authorities.

For now, the case stands as a fatal river recovery with few public details released. Law enforcement has not announced any additional victims, arrests, or road closures tied to the incident.

Missouri River bridge area has drawn a fatal response

Standing Bear Bridge spans a stretch of the Missouri River in Knox County, placing the crash scene in a remote and potentially hazardous setting for responders. Incidents in or near moving water often require more time and coordination than crashes on dry land.

The response on Sunday brought together deputies and recovery specialists as they worked at the riverbank. The sheriff’s office has not said whether the bridge itself was involved in the impact or whether the truck went directly from the roadway into the water.

At this point, the public record is limited to the fatality, the driver’s identity, and the recovery effort. Officials have not released any further update on the investigation.
