Top 5 Modern Monsters

Dracula! Frankenstein! Wolfman! And countless other iconic monsters are cemented into our pop culture forever. Even as time went on, they were still creating even more iconic monsters such as Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers and Jason. Now in 2017, we have hit a bit of a drag. they don’t make great iconic MONSTERS anymore. however some great monsters (both literal and metaphorical monsters) sometimes slip through the dreadful cracks of mediocre. With Halloween approaching, I wanted to shine some light on those monsters that probably deserve more credit.

So here are the Top Five Modern Monsters.

#5 The Beast

In the film, Split, James McAvoy portrays a man who has multiple personality disorder. Some of these personalities are much more dangerous than others. The most horrific personality is simply referred as “The Beast.” this is a true monster. veins bulging, bloodshot eyes and cannibalistic tendencies. It’s a marvel to witness.

#4 The Blind Man

The film, Don’t Breathe is about a trio of friends that break into an old blind man’s house. However as the movie progresses, more is revealed about this blind man who is portrayed by Stephen Lang. Don’t want to spoil what happens because for one I feel that this has not been seen by many but also it’s just not very pleasant to write about. By the end of the film, this unassuming blind man truly turns into a monster and that’s why he’s on this list.

#3 The Armitage Family & Co.

The Armitage Family and Co. in the film, Get Out are indeed monsters. The worst quality about them is that they think they are doing a good thing. The trailer does reveal that they have sinister intentions but it doesn’t reveal what they are. their intentions have all kinds of commentary infused in this great horror film. they’re monsters with a message.

#2 Krauss

In the movie, Detroit, William Poulter portrays a Cop named Krauss. I said that there would be both metaphorical and literal monsters on this list and this character, is in fact both. so he’s got that going for him. He’s the personification of evil in this. A true monster that hides behind a badge that represents everything that he is not. William Poulter almost portrayed the number 1 pick on this list but still ended up playing a different kind of monster this year.

#1 Pennywise The Dancing Clown

Earlier I talked about monsters ranging from Dracula to Freddy Krueger. All the monsters on this list are great, but I have a feeling that this is the one that has the best shot at being remembered with the greats. In the 90s, Tim Curry had portrayed this character. It became somewhat of an iconic performance. Now with the recent release of the newest adaptation of It, I believe that Bill Skarsgard as outshined Tim Curry in portraying the titular clown, Pennywise. I believe that 20 years from now, when thinking of Pennywise, people will think of the Skarsgard one. He’s manic, funny, scary and a pure monster. It feeds on children’s fears and to do that, it becomes them. Pennywise is the best modern monster as of now.
