Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – Teaser Trailer Analysis
"No one's Ever really Gone"
April 17, 2019
With the release of the Star Wars Episode 9 Teaser Trailer for the upcoming movie that is set to release some time in December of 2019, the Star Wars Saga must come to an end. This is the usual time when Star Wars films are released to theaters as the most recent Star Wars films, that being Episode 7: The Force Awakens, Rogue One, Episode 8: The Last Jedi, and Solo.
To give a brief summary of the past trilogies, here is the order in which the films were released. Original Trilogy: Episode 4: A New Hope (1977), Episode 5: Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Episode 6: Return of the Jedi (1983). Prequel Trilogy: Episode 1: Phantom Menace (1999), Episode 2: Attack of the Clones (2002), and Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith (2005).
Episode 9 will be the last episode of the saga as this will mark the third and final trilogy of the Star Wars Films, excluding films like Rogue One and Solo. Episode 9 will be the final part in what is known as the Sequel Trilogy. That being, Episode 7: The Force Awakens (2015) and Episode 8: The Last Jedi (2017).
On a side note, J.J. Abrams was the original director of The Force Awakens and was set to direct The Last Jedi but “had no intention to return.” Rian Johnson was then put in place as director for the film and was later fired after the Last Jedi’s release for reasons that are already obvious. Soon after this, J.J. Abrams was then offered the role as director of the next film.
The teaser trailer features Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamil) narrating over Rey (Daisy Ridley) in what looks to be a desert planet, possibly Rey’s home planet Jakku. There is a tie fighter approaching her and she begins to run away from it with her lightsaber drawn.
We then see the Millennium Falcon flying through what looks to be a planet in the Outer Rim with a city that has lit up. This then transitions to Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) running through what seems to be a battlefield in a forest as he leads First Order troops into battle. There is then a glimpse of Kylo Ren reforming his helmet.
We then see Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) piloting the Millennium Falcon with Chewbacca as they go through hyperspace. Billy Dee Williams was originally going to be in The Last Jedi and was going to be in some part of the movie where he would then betray the other characters part of the resistance, similar to his role in Empire Strikes Back.
Moving on, there are some speeder scenes on what looks to be Jakku once again, and then a scene of Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) holding the medallion she, Luke, and Han were awarded at the end of Return of the Jedi. It is here where Rey is seen hugging Leia for what may be the last time.
C-3P0, BB-8 and the newly added droid “Dio,” Chewbacca, Finn (John Boyega), Poe (Oscar Issac), and Rey are seen approaching the remains of original Death Star. They seem to be on what very well could be the planet of Endor as the final scenes in Return of the Jedi took place on the Moon of Endor as the remains could have landed on the actual planet.
Before the teaser trailer ends, Luke finishes his monologue, that can be heard throughout the teaser trailer, with, “No one’s ever really gone.” The screen fades to black and Emperor Palpatine’s laugh can be heard. The reincorporation of the Emperor isn’t far-fetched as Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Anakin appeared as “force ghosts” at the end of Return of the Jedi. So, the Emperor could possibly appear as a “force ghost” in Episode 9.
With that the title, and month of release are shown and the teaser trailer ends.
