2018 MLB Winter Meetings Days 1 & 2 Recap

Day 1

Day one of the 2018 winter meetings was just about as slow as you can get.   No trades or signings took place on Sunday, December 9th in Vegas.   However, there was some other big news in the world of baseball.  On Sunday the first two electees were selected into the baseball hall of fame where finalized and elected in via the ERA committee.

The two new members of the 2018 hall of fame class were Harold Baines and Lee Smith.  Lee Smith got in with a unanimous vote and his counterpart Harold Baines got 12 of the 16 votes (needed 12 votes to get in).

Smith played 18 seasons which was dived up with the Cubs, Red Sox, Cardinals, Yankees, Orioles, Angles, Reds and Expose.  Within those 18 seasons Baines had a career ERA of 3.03 and 478 saves which was the all-time MLB record, until Trevor Hoffman came along and broke that record on September 24, 2006

Day 2

Deals:  On day two of the 2018 winter meeting had a little more action then day one had in store.  On day two of the meetings two signings took place.

The first signing of the day was to veteran pitcher Tyson Ross.  Ross signed a 1-year-deal with the Detroit Tigers worth 5.75 million.   Ross last year between the Padres and the Cardinals posted a 4.15 ERA and a record of 8-9 between the two clubs.  Ross will provide the extra started Detroit was looking for to complete their starting rotation.

The second singing that took place on Monday was center fielder Billy Hamilton signed a 1-year-deal worth a 5.25-million-dollar deal with an option and preference incentives with the Kansas City Royals.

The final signing that took place on day two of the meetings was that the Red Sox signed reliver pitcher Nathan Eovaldi to a 4-year-deal worth 68 million dollars.  Eovaldi had the lowest ERA among Red Sox pitchers in last year’s postseason.
