The Conference Championship round of the 2018 NHL Playoffs, round 3, begins on Friday. Here are five players you should be paying attention to as the Conference Championships get underway from Tampa Bay, Washington, Las Vegas, and Winnipeg.

5. Mark Scheifele, F Winnipeg Jets

He leads the league in playoff goals scored, with 11 of them, including two in the winner-take-all game 7 in Nashville Thursday night. It’ll be interesting to see if he can keep scoring for the Jets, especially against a tough Golden Knights’ defense.

4. Andrei Vasilevskiy, G Tampa Bay Lightning

Vasilevskiy is a Vezina Trophy candidate, with a save percentage of .920 and a goals against average of 2.62 in 65 games.  In the playoffs, he has been even better, with a .927 save percentage and a 2.20 goals against. He faces a high-octane Washington Capitals team who in in the conference finals for the first time in the Ovechkin era.

3. Tom Wilson,  F Washington Capitals

He is more known for his brutal and sometimes questionable style of play than his scoring ability, and that has come under fire in these playoffs. Wilson is coming off a three game suspension after a bone-crushing hit to Penguins forward Zach Aston-Reese in round 2, which concussed and broke the jaw of Aston-Reese. Regardless of whether the suspension was warranted, he is back for the conference finals and don’t expect him to lighten up on hits anytime soon.

2. Marc-Andre Fleury, G Vegas Golden Knights

Fleury has become the leader of the expansion Golden Knights, and it is safe to say that he has been like a brick wall in the playoffs. A .951 save percentage and 1.53 goals against average is showing that opposing shooters have had a tough time beating Fleury in his 10 games played in the playoffs. The Jets are one of the highest scoring teams, so this matchup should be a fun one to watch from the start of the series to the end.

1. Alex Ovechkin, F Washington Capitals

He has finally made it past the second round! Ovechkin’s first conference final game is Friday night against the Lightning. He made the playoffs in nine previous years, but was eliminated before the conference finals every time. Look for Ovechkin to tear up the series in his first chance to play for the Stanley Cup, one of the things his very distinguished resume still lacks. Also look for him to be in his “spot” on the powerplay, the left side faceoff dot. He could be the deciding factor in the series against the Lightning.
