Call Me By Your Name Movie Review

Call Me By Your Name is a 2017 film that was nominated for several academy awards. It follows the life of Elio played by Timothee Chalamet and his eventual romance with Oliver played by Armie Hammer. It’s a beautiful and raw piece of film. I think on a certain level, everyone can connect to it through an emotional and human way.

I loved the look of this movie. I loved the feel that this movie gave you. Just this relaxed and laid back environment for Elio and Oliver to fall in love. It is the perfect setting for this story to take place. The old house with the creaky floors. The Italian roads that are made of stones or something. The setting is a character in of itself. And it’s captured with awe and comfort.

The cinematography is very well shot. I especially like how it’s shot early on in the film. Throughout a lot of the film, Elio is very frustrated about everything. In some shots, when a scene like that is happening, it’s captures a feeling of claustrophobia. Having it framed in a way where he seems boxed in or trapped with no where to go. Showcasing how he feels in his head also. I like that.

The only negative that I really have is that the film dragged at times. This is a slow movie for sure. It’s not boring though, there’s a difference between the two. It’s just that maybe a few scenes could have been trimmed. That’s really it though. Everything else is just about perfect in this film. The performances especially.

The acting in this practically makes the film. Timothee Chalment is great in this. That final shot, I was reading his mind in that moment. His acting was just that good. He was such a good choice because between this and Lady Bird, I’ve realized his acting style. He presents this way about him. Maybe just his monotone voice or something about his face. It seems that he has everything under control and is sure of all his actions.

However all of that is incredibly false. He’s literally one peach away from bursting into tears. He is so fragile and needs Oliver in his life so much and it’s great to see play out. Also Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlberg are in this and both are great. They are very underrated actors and deserve more credit. Hammer seems awkward through his free living style in the film. Then when with Elio, he seems to be absolutely natural. Overall it’s a great story with great characters.

It’s one of the year’s best and I highly recommend it. Also Mystery Of Love is a perfect song.
