Black Panther Hits Over $1 Billion Worldwide

Black Panther is record-breaking. For the past five weeks, Black Panther has topped the box office and has made over $1.18 billion worldwide. Domestically, the film grossed $605.4 million, making it the 7th film ever to pass the $600 mark. Black Panther is now the 5th Marvel film to make $1 billion, along with The Avengers, Iron Man 3, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain America: Civil War.

Right behind The Avengers, which grossed $623 million domestically, Black Panther is now the 2nd highest grossing superhero movie of all time. The Last Jedi grossed $619 million, directly in front of Black Panther. It is the first film since Avatar to take the #1 spot at the box office for 5 straight weeks.

This film is Disney’s 16th movie to make $1 billion or more and Marvel’s 3rd billion-dollar release in the past four years. Black Panther is also the first film of 2018 to hit $1 billion or more globally. It’s the biggest February release to date and holds the record for the biggest Presidents’ Day opening.

Black Panther has a 97% rating on Rotton Tomatoes—the highest rating within the MCU. Followed by Iron Man 3 with 94%, and The Avengers with 92%, which is tied with Thor: Ragnarok.

Director Ryan Coogler said that “never in a million years did we imagine that you all would come out this strong.” He continues: “It still humbles me to think that people care enough to spend their money and time watching our film.”
