                                         BLACK HISTORY MONTH FACTS

Did you know Black History month actually started as Black History Week? In 1926 an African American author, historian, scholar ,educator, and publisher. Carter G. Woodson created “Negro History Week” to highlight the accomplishment of the community during a time when their efforts was being ignored.                                                                                                                                          In 1969 the leaders of the Black united students at Kent State University propose for an extension.                                                                        In 1976 “Negro History Week” became a month-long celebration.                                                                                                                                           The celebration is within the same month as Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln birthdays.                                                                          The U.K celebrate Black History Month in October, while Canada follow the U.S by celebrating in February as well.

Claudette Colvin

Believe it or not Rosa Parks was not the first to be arrested by refusing to give up her seat. 9 months prior 15 year old Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat  and was also arrested. Claudette said “It was her constructional right.

 

 

Dorothy Dandridge

 

Dorothy Dandridge was the first African American women nominated for the

Best Actress Academy Award for her lead role in Carmen Jones.

 

 

 

Aretha Franklin

The AMAZING Aretha Franklin  was the first woman

inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Frame.

 

 

 

 

W.E.B Du Bois

 

W.E.B Du Bois was the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

 

 

 

 

Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie

       

 

Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie were the first African Americans to win GRAMMY Awards

 

 

Black History has had an impact on everyone. Black instruction has open their doors to other minorities facing discrimination.              Historical Black Colleges and Universities offered opportunities tp other discriminated communities.
