Short Term 12 Review

A fantastic emotional story about two characters whose lives parallel each other and both ultimately help each other find their own path. A great film that I never heard of until just a few months ago that I now think everyone should see.

Brie Larson plays a fairly young adult working at a home for at risk kids. Although she is just as troubled as the kids are. As the story furthers, learn more and more about her past which is emotional. A new kid comes and her and Larson ultimately connect.

This film is so good at withholding information and giving it to you when it would hit the most. It is so simple and just so great. Also just a very interesting and uneasy environment to spend a 90 minute movies. Everyone’s practically walking on eggshells waiting for something to just snap. It’s a great movie.

The movie is very grounded and there’s one scene where the film just got a little silly and extreme and thought it didn’t really match the tone of the rest of the film. That’s just a scene that bugged me. Everything else though is great. The octopus story just broke me.

Also Brie Larson is dating another worker named Mason at the home. Their relationship is very fleshed out with just minimal screen time. Love the scene where Mason has told a funny story and then Larson reveals the true sad ending to the story and he goes “I don’t like that part”. I thought that setup the two characters and their dynamic for the film wonderfully.

He’s very optimistic and engaging. However she is realist in the situation. Knowing that things are bad and things are real. She just doesn’t think that he knows too. Which you later find out, he absolutely does. And wants to know more. Great film. Put it on your watchlist and watch it. All the actors are great in this. Brie Larson, John Gallagher Jr, Kaitlyn Dever, Lakeith Stanfield and Rami Malik.

They’re all great.

See this.
