‘The Menu’ Movie Review

The+Menu+Movie+Review

A movie that many people have been waiting for, comparing it to a very popular movie ‘Midsommar’. ‘The Menu’ is a movie penned by Will Tracy and Seth Reiss. It focuses on a couple Margot, who is played by Anya Taylor-Joy, and Tyler, who is played by Nicholas Hoult. They visit an exclusive restaurant on a remote island where the famous chef, Chef Slowik, played by Ralph Fiennes, prepares a lavish tasting menu at his restaurant known as Hawthorne. Through this dinner they get shocking surprises throughout the night and wonder where the night is going to take them. It’s a thriller that kept me drawn in and asking questions of what will happen next?

In the first act of the movie we see it begins as a nice cruise to an island, but when the second act hits the movie starts to build a whole bunch of anticipation and suspense on what is going to happen next. In this movie what made me want to keep watching it was everything that was happening was just unexpected which made it so watchable. The combination of suspense and dark comedy is something I really enjoyed because this movie was so interesting and creative in so many ways.

When watching the trailer of this movie you would think it Is just a thriller survival story with food as the theme, but you would be completely wrong. When the dinner begins at first you are fascinated with how beautiful the scenery, the meal, and everything all around is. As it goes on it turns a whole different direction. You don’t have to expect hardcore gore or anything like that. This movie is perfect for people who are into less gore in movies. It is more of a soft and relax thriller that intrigues you throughout the film.

The main character played by Anya Taylor-Joy was a perfect role for her. The way she acted out the character showed how perfect she was for this role. She portrayed what the characters attitude and personality should be 100%. The way she acted out this character makes me believe no one else could have done it better. Another character that really stood out to me was Chef Slowik, played by Ralph Fiennes. Being the chef in this story with all these twists and turns, his acting was so laid back and relaxing, but still told the story so well. His emotions and body language really matched the character of the Chef very well. In the movie he is shown to have a love of cooking at first but as we see his story it shows how unhappy he was as a chef now. It started out with a love of cooking to destructive, psychopathic ways, which he portrayed very well.

For being a thriller, I found myself laughing a lot during this movie. They incorporated the humor very well in this movie. When the crazy plot twists start happening you would think it’d become more of a serious movie. But they still squeeze that humor in, and they made it work very well. They don’t really try to make you laugh but the small, incorporated humor in such serious situations made me laugh a lot.

A movie that I have seen this a lot compared to like I said before was Midsommar. I believe it isn’t though. After watching The Menu I decided to rewatch Midsommar. I saw many similarities in things like plot twists, but I think that the movies are every different overall. Midsommar was gory, mind-blowing and a really intelligent movie overall that had me thinking about it still to this day. On the other hand, The Menu wasn’t as crazy and mind blowing as Midsommar. In The Menu you can start to kind of guess what happens when you start understanding it. But in Midsommar, you never know what is going to happen next. In other aspects the build of the movies and ending are similar but I personally thing Midsommar is unmatched.

Overall, I would recommend The Menu to people. I watch movies a lot and go see at least once a week. And recently I haven’t enjoyed movies I have watched recently because they just have not interested me. But The Menu was one I fairly enjoyed and would definitely watch again. If you are into thriller/comedy/horror films I would say this is for sure a movie you should take time to watch. Overall I would give this movie a nice 7.3/10.
