Candy Canes

Candy+Canes

Candy canes are a beloved holiday treat that can be found hanging on Christmas trees, adorning gift packages, and filling stockings all around the world. These sweet, peppermint-flavored treats are a staple of the holiday season, and have a long and interesting history.

Candy canes were first created in the 1670s in Germany, where they were originally made from white sugar and flavored with peppermint or wintergreen. They were originally crafted in the shape of a “J” to represent the staff of the shepherds that visited the baby Jesus. In the early 20th century, a candy maker in Indiana started mass-producing candy canes and added the red stripe to represent the blood of Jesus, making them the candy canes that we know and love today.

The process of making candy canes is both complex and time-consuming, but it results in the delicious treat that we enjoy during the holiday season. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. First, the sugar is melted down and mixed with corn syrup and flavoring.
  2. The mixture is then poured onto a cool surface and allowed to harden.
  3. Once the mixture has hardened, it is broken into small pieces and placed into a machine called a batch roller.
  4. The batch roller mixes and kneads the candy until it becomes a smooth, pliable dough.
  5. The dough is then fed through a machine called an extruder, which pushes the dough through a small opening and forms it into the shape of a candy cane.
  6. The candy canes are then cut to their desired length and placed on a conveyor belt to cool.
  7. Once the candy canes have cooled, they are placed in a machine called a polisher, which gives them their shiny finish.

The final step is to add the red stripes to the candy canes. This is done by hand, using a thin strip of red candy.

The process of making candy canes is a long and labor-intensive process that requires a great deal of skill and attention to detail. All of it is worth it for the sweet peppermint treat.

There are several variations of candy canes that have been developed over the years, including chocolate candy canes, spicy cinnamon candy canes, and even bubblegum-flavored candy canes. These variations offer a wider range of flavors for people to enjoy, and they have become increasingly popular in recent years.

In addition to being a tasty treat, candy canes have also become a popular decorative item during the holiday season. They are often hung on Christmas trees, wreaths, and other holiday decorations, and they are also given as gifts to friends and loved ones.

Candy canes have become an integral part of holiday traditions around the world, and they continue to be a beloved treat that is enjoyed by people of all ages. Whether you are hanging them on your Christmas tree or enjoying them as a sweet treat, candy canes are an important part of the holiday season.
