Motor-City Comic Con

Motor-City Comic Con

Now that we have reached a new week, the Motor City Comic Con in Novi, Michigan will be closed up until next year. A three-day event taking us from October 14th to October 16th, this is something that people from all over come to experience. With celebrity guests, tons of art, and fun costumes, this year’s Motor City Comic-Con was definitely a good one!

Started in 1989 by Michael Goldman, Motor City Comic-Con (or MC3) has been running for thirty-three years. It is an extremely popular event, with an attendance of 70,000 at the 2019 convention. This year the attendance numbers are not yet out, but there was a fairly big crowd. Between first-time attendees and those who come back every year, the chance for meeting new people and making connections is large.

Whether you are a fan of movies, t-shows, or comic books, the Motor City Comic-Con has something for you. You can buy all sorts of merchandise: keychains, t-shirts, hoodies, buttons, posters, jewelry, and all kinds of art. Comic-Con is a wonderful place for artists to show off their work and advertise their trade. You can find a ton of super original and unique pieces. Some artists will even sign their work if you ask them too, which makes it an even better keepsake. Promoting local and underground artists is an amazing positive side effect of hosting Motor City Comic-Con.

Along with what feels like a huge shopping mall, the Motor City Comic-Con has a number of celebrities come each year. This year there was a good variety of different VIPs, including Karen Gillian (Doctor Who, Guardians of the Galaxy), Alex Kingston (Doctor Who, ER), Matt Smith (House of Dragon, Doctor Who), Jamie Farr (M*A*S*H, The Cool Kids), Alice Cooper (Musician), Danny Lloyd (The Shining), and several more! And every year is different, so you never know who you have the possibility of meeting next time! Depending on how much you are willing to pay you can meet these people, take pictures, and get autographs. One remarkable thing about Comic-Con though is that even if you are not willing to break the bank, there is always the possibility to run into your favorite stars just milling around out and about at the convention. Sometimes, the celebrity guest will also do panels where fans can line up and ask their own questions about the actor themself or the show/movie they worked on. This leads to funny stories and personal insights from the cast, all prompted by fan inquiries.

One of the things that really pulls Comic-Con is most well-known for is the costumes. Some people just dress casually and there is nothing wrong with that, but a great number of people dress for the occasion in costumes that resemble their favorite characters. Costumes can be handmade or storebought, but all are part of the climate of the convention.

Between merchandise, celebrities, art, and costumes, Motor City Comic-Con is a unique way to spend a weekend with friends and/or family!
