Sweetest Day

There are over 1,200 national holidays, and this is just one of them! This year, Sweetest day landed on a Saturday, October 21.  This holiday will always fall on the third Saturday of October. Sweetest day is a holiday that is extremely well known and celebrated in the United States. The “first” Sweetest day was on October 10, 1921. Sweetest day was first planned by a committee of 12 candy makers. Candymakers distributed over 20,000 boxes of candy, just in Ohio alone. Candy was distributed by movie stars including Ann Pannington. Just like Valentine’s day, Sweetest day is associated with heart-shaped candy boxes and chocolates and flowers. The popularity of this holiday was brought up in Detroit, Michigan because of the Sanders candy company.

People commonly say that Sweetest day is “for the men.” Women will ice their significant other small gestures to celebrate their relationship with one another. Obviously, the most common gift is candy. Some also say that Sweetest day is a second Valentine’s day or just a smaller version. It is just another day to recognize the close and important relationships that one may have.

Gabrielle Oxie, a senior at Dakota High School, says, “I spent Sweetest day with my boyfriend, we went out to dinner and we celebrated the relationship that we have with each other. I think it is important to just take a day to show and tell your partner how much they mean to you.”
